The Philippine Nautical Highway is becoming a popular route for travellers who wants to travel on budget and at the same time see more of the countryside (and kill some time for those who've got lots of time to kill).
I am not sure what it is that some people have "against" taking the bus or the ferries. One thing I can think of is image. As travelling is also a thing of status as planes are too. So, I THINK, if you take the bus or the ferry (for long distance travels) you are considered "poor". Oh well, I don't care much as I am a lover of buses and ferries even if they are more expensive at times compared to taking the planes. Enough of that and let's go back to the Philippine Nautical Highway.
Try the nautical highway. If you can find time like a week or so... it is one of the best alternatives to see the Philippines. You can do island hopping in the process as well as hear different languages and dialects and taste different delicacies that comes with the islands.
Sad thing is that there is no updated data to be found in the net regarding the route and the buses and ferries serving it (or maybe I am just too lazy to look for them but I don't care because I normally take whatever is there).
I will post some more on the nautical highway if I get some new infos.
Happy Travel!!!
